When Is It Time To Say Goodbye To Your Garbage Disposal?

garbage disposal being fixed

We love our garbage disposals since they can make cleaning up after dinner a breeze. Simply chucking in leftovers and watching them disappear never gets old and cuts down on having to take out so many trash bags. However, your garbage disposal may show its age, so here are some of the signs that you may need to replace that garbage disposal.

Sounds of a haunted drain

One of the easiest ways to determine if your garbage disposal is on its way out is by listening to your disposal! An older garbage disposal can make odd clanging or rattling sounds that signal internal components deteriorating.

Before scheduling a replacement, make sure that nothing was dropped into the disposal by accident. Take a glance to see if silverware or other small household objects did not fall into your garbage disposal. Please, for safety reasons, do not reach into your garbage disposal to check for blockages, and when inspecting your garbage disposal, always make sure it is powered off.

Lingering smells

We know that some food can smell, expected, but there are limits. When it comes to your garbage disposal, make sure that your drains do not smell like the undead for longer than a day, as this could be a sign that your disposal needs replacement.

Typically when food gets trapped in your garbage disposal, we can offer repairs that quickly remove any food waste. However, the issue arises when this food waste clinging onto your machine persists after repairs, which is a sign to get a new garbage disposal.

Leaks

If you begin to notice water leaks coming from your garbage disposal, you should immediately contact our plumbers to help remedy the situation. Garbage disposals, over time, can develop damage to the exterior chassis that comes in the form of small cracks and eventually lead to leaks.

While a few ounces of water might not sound urgent, the issue is far more concerning than just a tiny puddle of water under your sink! Leaks can cost you money through higher utility bills and even lead to mold growth that becomes quite the burden.

Power issues

Last but not least, if you are finding yourself constantly having to reset your garbage disposal; to turn it on, and even then still have issues having the appliance power on, you need a replacement. While resetting your garbage disposal is not uncommon, it can be a great quick fix for minor issues; repeated use can signify you have more significant underlying problems with the machine.
